Questions Raised Over Wellbeing of Salmon During Thermal Treatments

*Two studies recently published in Veterinary and Animal Science have raised questions about the welfare of Atlantic salmon during thermal delousing treatments.

Results of the studies found that exposure to warm water caused a highly aversive reaction that was likely attributed to the sudden change in temperature, not the presence of other fish or manual handling.

STUDY I: Thermal injuries in Atlantic salmon in a pilot laboratory trial

Study II: Sudden exposure to warm water causes instant behavioural responses indicative of nociception or pain in Atlantic salmon
